Tanna, one of Vanuatu’s 83 islands, is not a frequent tourist destination, but there is one particular experience that is unbelievable – Mt Yasur, a live volcano.

You arrive at the volcano just before sunset; you drive to the base of Yasur volcano and then walk up the final incline. Getting closer to the volcano, you can see where the ash from the volcano has destroyed much of what once lived. Listening to Mt Yasur rumble and feeling the ground tremble beneath you reminds you of how powerful nature is and how tiny we are.

On the summit of the Vanuatu Volcano, you can walk along the spine, looking down into the core of molten lava. Then you relax and wait for the sun to go down, the molten orange spectacle getting better every minute.

Yasur volcano hisses, and throws massive plumes of smoke and ash high into the air, showering the levels beneath us with lava, and we watch them change from red to black.

After sunset you head back down the Tanna Volcano, using torches to navigate the rocky descent.

And if the Tanna Volcano doesn’t inspire you – nothing will!
