The process for applying for a passport today is not complicated, but there are important facts that everyone should know before applying. It is important to have all of the facts before jumping in because there are a large number of options available for processing a passport application. It is important to know how to locate a U.S. passport office near you and decide whether you want to apply at your local post office or at an acceptance facility or passport office. There are a wide variety of options available when applying for a passport. There are also related costs that can add up quickly if you are not careful.

The first thing to keep in mind while preparing to apply for your passport is that you will need around $120.00 for the application fee and related fees. You will not have to pay more than the $95.00 application fee if your application is not approved. It is also good to know that most changes that are needed after the passport is issued will not cost much if they cost anything at all. Most changes are simple and free.

There are a few different options available for applying for a passport, but the government requires that an individual apply in person in order to verify identity. The majority of applicants just apply at the post office and this is a good option for most. Applying for a new passport or changes to an existing passport is quite simple and affordably done at the local post office branch. Your pass port office branch should have all of the forms you need.

Some cities also have separate passport offices that can handle applications and changes to passports. These locations can be found at the government passport website. The government requires that an individual be present in person to apply for a passport. There is a significant amount of verification information that is needed to complete the application and the applicant must provide this information.

It is necessary that you apply for your passport in person because your identity will have to be verified. Citizenship will have to be verified as well and the applicant will be required to provide proof of naturalization, a birth certificate, social security card, or proof of birth abroad. For applicants that cannot provide this proof, the government will verify citizenship, but this will cost an additional $60. These fees will be added to the application and issuance fees.

An applicant must also provide a proof of identity, which is usually a photo ID like a driver’s license or a previously issued passport. A military ID or government employee ID will be accepted as well. If this identification information cannot be provided alternatives may be available to prove identity.

A photocopy of all identifying paperwork and documentation must be presented along with the original documents when the application is turned into the acceptance agency. A passport application will not be processed without these photocopies. These copies must be on standard 8.5×11 paper and the size of the original documents cannot be altered down. Images can be made larger, but not smaller.

There are many steps involved in applying for a passport, but if you are careful to follow each step you should not have a problem when submitting your application. It is relatively simple to locate a US passport office near your home as well. Between acceptance agencies, passport offices, and post offices there are many options available for submitting your application. Just be sure to take all documentation, copies, photo ID, and fees with you and it should be smooth sailing.
