For most airline passengers, paying up to $5000 or more for a business class ticket in order to better enjoy the flight simply isn’t an option. However, what very few people realize is that most airlines will occasionally upgrade passengers from economy class for free – if they meet certain criteria.

In this article, I will pass on some of the things that the gate attendants look for and require so that you can take advantage of the loopholes and get your upgrade for free. These five top tips are the ones mentioned by the check in staff of some of the best-known airlines, and are considered by many regular travellers to be the best chance you have of getting upgraded for free.

Tip Number 1:

Look the part.

Make sure that you are presentable when you travel. There is almost no chance of getting upgraded if you are wearing shorts and a scruffy t-shirt, so at the very least, check in wearing a shirt and pants. There is no need to go overboard and wear a suit – unless you really want to. The key is to look well dressed, but not overdoing it.

Tip Number 2:

Check in early.

The check-in staff already know how many passengers are travelling on a particular flight well in advance, so if there are extra seats in business class, they will already know it.

Tip Number 3:

Be Polite.

Put yourself in the place of the check in staff. Would you reward a person who gives causes you grief, or someone who is friendly and polite. There may be 250 people in the line behind you, so make them remember you. Flirt, smile, use their name, be nice, and you may well get a pleasant surprise.

Tip Number 4:

Be a Frequent Flier.

If you belong to an airline’s frequent flier program, you have a much better chance to be rewarded with an upgrade because the airline will want to repay you for your loyalty. Even if you are not a frequent flier, go to the airline’s website and join their program online. It doesn’t take very long and is will really increase your upgrade chances.

Tip Number 5:

Ask.

As they say nothing ventured, nothing gained, so make sure you ask – but do it at the appropriate time. If the ticket agents are very busy, and they haven’t responded to your nice guy approach, don’t ask them for an upgrade, wait until you get to the gate. If the gate attendants are impressed with your demeanor, when they ask you if you have any specific seat request, be cheeky and say “Business Class” to them. You might just get lucky!

International traveling can be fun, but it requires meticulous planning well in advance. it is important to familiarize yourself with the culture of your destination country if you are travelling for the first time.

Few Useful International Travel Safety Tips

Before leaving for any country, read the consular information sheet for the destination that describes the expected local conditions. A useful international travel safety tip is always and always check for any pertinent public announcement or travel warnings on the net of television. It is essential to learn about local customs and laws as much as you can. This can be done with the help of the travel agent, local library or Internet.

Another important international travel safety tip is to make photocopies of airlines ticket, passport identification page, traveler’s cheques serial numbers, state ID or driver’s license and credit cards. Carry one copy, but pack it separately from the originals, and give one copy to the friend, relative or co-worker. This information can be very helpful in case your original documents and valuables get stolen or lost.

Another useful international travel safety tip is to leave the copy of itinerary with friends or family so that they can contact you in case of emergency. It is also advisable to carry a list of prescriptions you might be taking. If you are carrying any medication, especially the one that could be considered a narcotic, you must check drug’s legality, or get the doctor’s letter stating that you need that medication.

Another important international travel safety tip is to avoid any area during the stop-over that makes you feel uncomfortable. It is best to take the direct flights so that you can save the time spent on take-offs and landing. It is also advisable to travel light, and make sure that you can easily carry your belongings without any help. If you are traveling to a remote area, or going to a foreign county for more than two weeks or plan to visit the high-risk area, register with the local embassy upon arrival, as it will be easier during evacuation in case of emergency.

Once you reach a foreign country, you are subject to the laws of that particular country, and if you get into any legal trouble, get in touch with the consular officer as soon as you can. An important international travel safety tip is to dress conservatively so that you don’t become the easy target for crooks and pickpockets. Do not carry too many valuables, and use traveler’s cheques and credit cards instead of cash. To avoid snatching of the bags from the curb, wear the strap of the bag across your chest.

A useful international travel safety tip is to walk confidently and act as if you know your way and destination, even when you are lost. If possible, take directions only from the individuals in authority such as hotel concierges or police officers. Learn few words of the local language, and do not get involved in the discussion with the strangers.

When leaving the country, keep the receipts of the exported goods handy. A useful international travel safety tip is to be courteous, and answer the questions asked by security and customs officers.

A useful international airport travel tip is to leave for the airport well in advance with all the requirement documents and Ids. Avoid metal studs in your clothes like big buckle belts and shoes with metal heels as they can set off the metal detectors at security checkpoint.
